Why Adam Peaty is not taking part in mixed 4×100 meters medley relay final

Adam Peaty will not be taking part in the mixed 4×100 meters medley relay final at the Paris Olympics.

There had been hope that Peaty would feature in the final, which takes place on Saturday night, where Team GB are hoping to win another medal in the swimming pool. Peaty had earlier said he’d had the “worst week” physically after claiming silver in the men’s 100m breaststroke on Sunday night.

Following the race Peaty tested positive for coronavirus and has also picked up other infections including an ear infection – although it is unclear whether this is connected to him having had coronavirus.

While Peaty featured in the men’s 4x100m medley relay preliminaries, Team GB named Kathleen Dawson, James Wilby, Duncan Scott and Anna Hopkin as the line-up for the mixed showpiece on Saturday evening.

Peaty said earlier on Friday: “It’s been a rough, rough week but hopefully we’ll find our way through the next 36 hours,” Peaty said.

“(It’s) probably (been) the worst week of my life in terms of how my body is – and that is no exaggeration.

“Everything’s come at once and since Covid, I’ve been waking up every day with a different thing.

“The medical team has been brilliant and it’s just a victory getting on that starting block. Now hopefully, that will give my body a nice, little push for tomorrow.”

Dawson will be on backstroke duties, Wilby is in for Peaty for the breaststroke, Scott will take the butterfly leg while Hopkin will finish off on freestyle.

Scott, who replaces Joe Litchfield in the only change from Friday’s heats. He has the opportunity to win his ninth Olympic medal, which would draw him level with the Team GB record of nine, currently held by cyclist Sir Jason Kenny.

The mixed 4×100 meters medley relay final takes place at around 9pm and will be live on BBC One.
