The first medals are here! Mexico’s great start at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

Two days before the start of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the Mexican delegation has already stood out in the medal table, achieving four medals and placed 30th at the time of this edition. With this spectacular start, Mexican athletes are looking to surpass the record of 22 medals they achieved in Tokyo 2020.

The first to hang a medal was Haidee Aceves in swimming. The Mexican won the silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke category at the Paris La Defense Arena pool with a time of 2:21.79. According to the Americas RecordThe athlete, originally from the state of Jalisco, was just six hundredths of a second away from winning the gold, which was obtained by Pin Xiu Yip, from Singapore, who did a time of 2:21.73.

Angel of Jesus Camacho He was another Mexican who made the Aztec country proud. The swimmer came in third place in the 100-meter freestyle S4 competition, finishing with a time of 1:22.32. With this feat, the swimmer took home a bronze medal.

“I feel very happy and pleased to be able to accomplish this feat, the bronze medal. We have worked hard to achieve this. This bronze medal was a great feeling because in Tokyo I came in fourth place in this same event, it was something very special for me,” he told the Mexican Paralympic Committee after obtaining his medal.

Another of the medals of the Paralympic competition came thanks to Rosa Maria Guerrero Cazareswho took home a bronze medal in the discus throw competition. The athlete made six throws, reaching a distance of 25.81 metres, which gave her access to the podium.

How many Mexicans participate in the Paralympic Games?

The Mexican delegation is made up of 67 athletes who will participate in 11 of the 22 disciplines registered, with athletics and swimming being the ones with the largest number of athletes. Other disciplines also include boccia, cycling, equestrian, powerlifting, rowing, taekwondo, table tennis, archery and triathlon. The Olympic competition will take place from August 28 to September 8 and the Mexican delegation seeks to surpass the mark of 22 medals obtained at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games; seven of them gold.

According to data from media such as Fox Sports MexicoMexico has participated in the Paralympic Games since 1972 and has won a total of 311 medals. The event in which the Mexican delegation had the best performance was Holland 1980, with 42 medals in total, 20 of them gold.
