Texas A&M vs Auburn football: Score-by-score recap, highlights

Texas A&M football’s chance at a College Football Playoff spot took a huge hit Saturday with a disappointing loss to Auburn.

The Aggies were down 21-7 at the half, but roared back to take a late lead. An Amari Daniels touchdown run with 4 minutes left gave A&M a three-point edge. That 31-28 advantage was short-lived as Auburn kicker Ian Vachon nailed a 41-yarder to take the game to overtime.

Four overtime periods later, once the game moved from attempts at touchdowns to 2-point conversion attempts, a Tiger completion followed by an Aggies dropped sealed A&M’s fate — for the game and possibly the postseason.

The Tigers jumped on the Aggies early, scoring 21 unanswered points to start the game, aided by a missed field goal from Randy Bond and an interception by Marcel Reed deep in Auburn’s territory.

A&M has struggled to stop the running game while also giving up explosive plays that put them in a hole.

Auburn finished the first two quarters with 240 total yards, with 190 coming in the air. They were led by freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman who entered the break with four receptions, 112 yards, and two touchdowns. Coleman finished with seven catches for 128 yards.

Auburn’s KeAndre Lambert-Smith makes a miraculous catch then A&M’s Amari Daniels drops a pass in the end zone to give the Tigers a wild win.

First Marcel Reed, then Payton Thorne throw incompletions to push the game to a fourth extra frame.

Randy Bond, A&M’s kicker, makes a 42-yarder to send the game to a third overtime. Bond had a rare field goal miss earlier in the game.

The Aggies elected to defend first and the Tigers get a 41-yard field goal from Ian Vachon. But the possession wasn’t without controversy. An offensive pass interference flag wipes away a completion for first-and-goal from the 2, which stymied the Auburn drive

Jarquez Hunter runs it in from 2 yards two plays after a defensive pass interference in the end zone.

Auburn won the toss and deferred. Texas A&M scored on a 12-yard pass to Jahdae Walker

After a long run by Payton Thorne, new Auburn kicker Ian Vachon ties the game late and sends it to overtime.

Amari Daniels runs it in from 8 yards to make it 30-28. The extra point pushes A&M’s first lead to 31-28. A 36-yard third-down completion to Jabre Barber was key in the drive.

Entering the fourth quarter down seven and needing a play, the Aggies’ defense stepped up in a big way. Defensive back BJ Mayes intercepts a Thornton pass and sets up A&M’s offense on the Tigers’ 15-yard line. However, the Aggies offense was unable to gain a single yard and settled for a Bond field goal to cut the deficit to 28-24.

The Aggies’ offense only mustered two yards and went three and out, and from there, Auburn was able to move the ball downfield with ease. The four-play, 55-yard drive took only one minute and 36 seconds off the clock before the Tigers were able to plunge in for the one-yard score, 28-21.

As bad as the Aggies’ start to the game was, that’s how good their second half has been. Following their scoring drive with a three and out on defense, they came out on offense once again and cashed in on a one-play 73-yard touchdown pass from Reed to Thomas once again, tying the game up 21-21.

A&M needed to come out of the halftime break with a sense of urgency, and that’s exactly what they did. Starting with the football to open the third quarter, the Aggies orchestrated a 10-play, 76-yard drive, capped off by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Reed to wide receiver Noah Thomas, 21-14.

Things have been ugly in the first half for the Aggies, but they cash in on much-needed points late in the second quarter. Following a 15-play, 75-yard drive, A&M goes into the shotgun with Terry Bussey taking the snap, and he punches in from 2 yards out, 21-7.

After going down two touchdowns, A&M needed to answer with a scoring drive of their own to steal back some momentum. Instead, Reed throws an interception in Auburn territory.

The Tigers capitalized on the mistake and drove down the field for a six-play, 88-yard drive, capped off by Coleman’s second touchdown of the NIGHT, 21-0.

Fresh off an Aggies offensive drive that ended with a missed 54-yard field goal from kicker Randy Bond, the Tigers quickly strike again, this time with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Payton Thorne to freshman Cam Coleman to take the early double-digit lead, 14-0.

The Aggies won the toss to start the game and deferred to the second half, putting their defense on the field first. However, they didn’t get the start they were looking for, as the Tigers marched down the field for a 10-play drive that was capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Jaruqez Hunter to take the early lead, 7 -0.

Texas A&M vs Auburn predictions

Tony Catherine: The Aggies know what is at stake these next two weeks, and they know none of it matters if they drop this week’s game against Auburn. I expect A&M to come out locked in and focused as they go and take care of business in a tough SEC environment. Texas A&M 27, Auburn 16.

Cedric Golden: This won’t be an easy pre-Texas game. The Aggies don’t play great, but they avoid disaster on the road and enter next week’s showdown with Texas with their SEC/CFP dreams still intact. Texas A&M, 24, Auburn 20.
