SIGA launches large-scale anti-corruption drive to weed out graft, money-laundering, tax evasion in sport

Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), on Aug 8, announced the launch of a large-scale Anti-Corruption in Sport campaign which builds upon the New York Declaration on Financial Integrity and Transparency in Sport (FITS) that was formalized recently.

The global campaign articulates the main issues that deeply impact and threaten the future of contemporary sport, namely corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion.

SIGA global chief executive officer, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros (main image), encouraged global alignment behind the campaign.

“As the Olympic, and Paralympic Games command the world’s gaze, with the popularity of sports soaring to new heights, safeguarding the integrity of sport has never been more critical,” said de Medeiros.

“Like the UEFA and CONMEBOL tournaments, these events are not just competitions. They are a celebration of human potential, a testament to the indomitable spirit, and a unifying force across nations.

“The essence of sport is rooted in its integrity. It is what transforms mere games into legacies, athletes into role models, and moments into history.”

He added that sport officials can never let their guard down against the threats that jeopardize their respective sport’s integrity, reputation, and global appeal.

“The call for a robust, collective, coordinated global approach to overcome them has never been more pressing. As the world’s leading independent coalition in the field of sport integrity, our resolve is unwavering.”

He added that SIGA will consolidate its “cohesive and action-oriented critical mass of key stakeholders, and bring in others that are willing, able, and capable of tackling the financial integrity and transparency threats in the sports industry.”

The full list of signatories will be showcased during SIGA’s International Anti-Corruption Week, scheduled for Dec 7-13, 2024.
