Richard Gere Jokes About Becoming Bilingual Ahead of ‘Great’ Move to Spain with Wife Alejandra Silva and Their Kids

The ‘Pretty Woman’ actor recently sold his Connecticut home for $11 million after revealing his plans to put down roots in Madrid with his family

Richard Gere is getting ready for his big move to Spain!

During a Nov. 20 appearance on the Today show, the pretty woman actor, 75, opened up about the new journey he’s embarking on with his family in Madrid while discussing his upcoming series The Agency.

“You and your wife and your little ones are moving to Spain!” host Savannah Guthrie said to the actor. Gere shares sons Alexander, 5, and James, 4, with wife Alejandra Silva, 41.

I responded, “My wife is Spanish, and we’re going there for her family, her friends, her culture. The kids are bilingual, so it’s really going to be great for them.”

“Then you’ll become bilingual, hopefully…” Guthrie teased.

Joking back, Gere said, “Perfect! You come to Spain, we’ll do the whole show in Spanish,” to which Guthrie replied, “Challenge accepted!”

The actor’s excitement over his family’s new chapter comes after he officially sold their $11 million New Canaan, Conn., home in October.

Gere lived in the six-bedroom, 11-bathroom abode with his wife and children for two years after purchasing it in 2022 for $10.8 million, according to local outlet the New Canaan Advertiser. At one point after making the real estate purchase, Gere reportedly wanted to turn the property into a farm.

Along with his younger children, Gere is father to son Homer, 24, from his second marriage to Carey Lowell. Silva also has an 11-year-old son, Albert, with ex-husband Govind Friedland.

During an interview with Vanity Fair Spain In April, Gere hinted at his plans to relocate to his wife’s home country so she can be near her relatives there.

“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” he said. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”

He continued, “I love Spain and I think your lifestyle is fabulous. Also your ability to live transmitting joy and happiness. It is a beautiful place, the food is extraordinary and the people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy.”

While Gere told VF Spain that he was ready for his upcoming “great adventure” as he has never lived full-time outside the United States” before, he noted that he’s still keeping a property “in the countryside near New York” to have a foothold here.

Gere and Silva have lived in the US since they tied the knot in 2018. They first met in Positano, Italy, in 2014.
