Police in Yellowknife seize 1kg of methamphetamine

Yellowknife RCMP say they now know that a substance they seized back in May this year is methamphetamine.

Police carried out a search warrant on May 22 at a “recently vacated apartment,” according to a news release issued Thursday, and arrested a suspect who was trying to flee off the balcony.

They seized two handguns, over $12,000 in cash, prescription drugs, illicit cannabis products, and what they suspected to be cocaine.

Test results for the substance they thought to be cocaine came back last week and showed to be methamphetamine pressed in a pill form.

“The RCMP believes this is the largest seizure of this substance in the Northwest Territories to date,” the release said.

A 21-year-old from Saskatoon, Sask., was arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to drug trafficking, possession of a firearm with ammunition without a license and possession of a property obtained by crime.

He was released to appear in court at a later date.
