Packers broke Bucks coach Doc Rivers’ heart, and Brook Lopez watched

Doc Rivers may be coaching the Milwaukee Bucks, and his number may be retired by Marquette University, but the Chicago native is a Bears fan through and through. He has joked in passing about the jobs of his favorite NFL team since moving back to Wisconsin, but he couldn’t help himself in sharing his agony over the Bears’ last-second meltdown at Soldier Field in which the Green Bay Packers blocked a potential game-winning field goal.

When asked about center Brook Lopez’s hot shooting night in the Bucks’ 101-100 victory over Houston on Monday night at Fiserv Forum, Rivers relayed how the center was getting extra work in the day before and just so happened to catch his heartbreak in real time .

“I came into the facility yesterday evening, I’m the only one in there watching the Bears about to get their field goal blocked and Brook was the only other guy in there shooting,” Rivers began. “And, it’s funny, because after they got it blocked Brook walks into my office and says I’m shooting and I see you with your head down on the table, just want to check on you – I knew what happened. “It was a really cool thing just watching him shoot over and over and over again and it came through today.”

Packers’ Matt LaFleur on Bears wanting NFL to review blocked field goal

After the Bears said they’ll send video to the league office to argue a missed penalty, Matt LaFleur addressed it during Monday’s press conference.

Lopez couldn’t help but laugh recounting the scene, as there is a large picture window between Rivers’ office and the practice courts.

“I was shooting free throws. Maybe I should’ve been focusing on my workout but I couldn’t help it,” Lopez said. “I saw the Bears lining up and it was a pretty far field goal from the looks of it and so I saw Doc watching. I could see the time, score left. I saw it go up, and I couldn’t see where the ball went but I just saw Doc go….”

Lopez then pantomimed a surrender cobra and then slowly lowered his head down to table in defeat. He rose again, chuckling.

“It was incredible,” Lopez said. “So I obviously knew what happened. I was so happy to be there. That’s the reward for working hard! You get stuff like that!”
