Flash flood and severe thunderstorm emergency alerts issued for Kings County

An emergency alert has been issued for Kings County, NS, for flash floods and severe thunderstorms.

The alert issued at 3 pm Sunday warned of rainfall rates of over 25 millimeters per hour or higher and total rainfall amounts of up to 70 millimeters.

Heavy downpours can trigger flash floods and water pooling on roads, the alert said. People in the area are warned not to drive through water on the roads.

It said strong wind gusts can toss loose objects.

The alert told residents must be prepared to call 9-1-1 if they need to evacuate.

It said residents should be prepared to take pets, important documents, medication, food and emergency supplies with them should they need to evacuate.

Environment Canada has also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Annapolis, Digby, Hants and Lunenburg counties as well as the Halifax metro area and western Halifax County.

A cluster of thunderstorms is traveling eastward at 50 km/h, the agency said.

The warnings say hail of two centimeters or more is possible.
