CNN’s Larry Madowo Confronts Kenyan Police During Nairobi Protests

Top of the Ticker: CNN International correspondent Larry Madowo was in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday covering protests against President William Ruto when he was struck by fragments from tear gas canisters fired by police. The canisters were aimed in the direction of journalists covering the demonstrations, which were primarily organized by Gen-Z Kenyans. CNN’s cameras captured the incident as Madowo called out to police: “Why are you shooting at me?”

Dateline Hollywood: Dateline NBC got The Hollywood Reporter treatment as part of the trade publication’s Podcast Power issue. In addition to finishing in the Top 10 on THR’s Most Powerful People in Podcasting list, Dateline got the feature treatment as senior executive producer, Liz Cole and correspondents Andrea Canning, Josh Mankiewicz and Keith Morrison gathered together for a major interview. The pieces notes how the Dateline team “have become celebrities of a sort,” garnering the attention of Taylor Swift and even inspiring a song from her.

Star Power: Whoever occupies the 8 pm hour on Fox News tends to be the network’s biggest star. Just ask Bill O’Reilly, Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson. The latest beneficiary of that timeslot is Jesse Wattershost of Jesse Watters Primetime. According to a profile in Newsweek. that 8 pm show saw its audience grow by 96% over the past year, passing O’Reilly’s numbers and within striking distance of Carlson. “There was a geyser of action and I’ve been fortunate to ride that wave,” Watters said in the article.

Full Scripps: After two years as a regular Scripps News sports contributor, Paul Crane has been elevated him to full-time corresponding beginning Monday, August 12. Crane—whose resume consists of local and national work, including at CNN Sports and CNN/SI—will appear on programs across the network and also work closely with Scripps News sports reporters in more than 50 cities across the country who live and work in the communities they cover.

Smartmatic Suit: A trio of current and former Smartmatic executives—including president and co-founder Roger A. Pinate—have been charged with allegedly participating in a bribery and money laundering scheme in the Philippines. The voting technology company is currently involved in separate defamation lawsuits with Fox News and Newsmax over their coverage of the 2020 presidential election. In June, Newsmax filed a motion to dismiss the suit as “meritless.”
