HOUSTON – Houston Blue is here.

University of Houston Athletics, in paying homage to the City of Houston, will adopt “Houston Blue” into its uniform selections with teams to wear commemorative uniforms on a select occasion against an in-state rival.

Houston Football will sport a new look Houston Blue uniform on Senior Day against in-state rival Baylor on Nov. 23 inside TDECU Stadium. Fans in attendance are encouraged to “Blue Out” TDECU Stadium. The first 20,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative blue rally towel.

Houston Volleyball will unveil its new “Houston Blue” jerseys as part of its Nov. 9 contest against Texas Tech.

“As a university deeply connected to the fabric of Houston, incorporating ‘Houston Blue’ into our uniforms is a powerful way to celebrate the city’s rich history,” University of Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Eddie Nuñez said. “From iconic blue street markers to the Houston Police Department’s signature blue police cars and helicopters, this color holds a special place in the hearts of Houstonians. We’re thrilled to share this tradition with our fans and offer them the chance to show their pride through exclusive merchandise, making it an exciting time for Cougar Nation to rally together.”

HOUSTON BLUE in the BAYOU CITY
Houston Blue’s history in the Bayou City includes a decorated history inside – and outside – the sports arena.

In the early 1920s, the City of Houston’s original street markers were installed as light blue, and white tiles were fitted into drying cement curbs, with approximately 4,000 still in existence today.

In the 1960s, the Houston Police Department began using the color on their cars.

The Houston Buffs, the city’s minor league baseball team (eventually replaced by the Colt .45s in 1962), sported blue lettering on white or gray jerseys. In 1960, the team wore blue caps with a white “H” on the front. In 1961, their jerseys featured light blue lettering.
