UK heatwave return date predicted by one forecaster

The hot weather we’ve enjoyed over the past few days will quickly become a thing of the past over the next week or so but we might still get further opportunities to crack open that sun cream before the end of August. This week saw the hottest day of the year so far as thousands of people flocked to beaches up and down the country to really take in the summer holidays.

Parts of Wales saw temperatures of over 27C this week while Kew Gardens and Heathrow saw the numbers reach as high as 32C. But the Met Office has now warned that the weather is becoming “more changeable over the weekend” and is even warning about the possibility of “persistent rain” in the coming days. For large parts of Wales Saturday looks mostly fine and dry with temperatures still reaching a warm 20C in Cardiff later on in the afternoon. Sunday will be a bit more cloudy but dry although large parts of Wales can expect some rain on Monday. The rest of the week is a mixed bag of rain and dry spells.

Met Office chief meteorologist Andy Page said: “The recent influence of high pressure on the UK’s weather is now subsidizing and is being replaced by more of a dominant westerly weather regime. “This is seeing temperatures dip back towards average for the time of year for many but will also open the door to some more persistent rain into northwestern areas in the coming days.”

The latest Met Office forecast added: “A westerly weather regime is likely to continue through next week, with bands of rain at times, with these most likely to be heaviest in northern and western areas but also some drier interludes also likely at times. Temperatures are likely to remain around average for the time of year, perhaps slightly higher in parts of the south with more frequent sunshine.”

However there is still hope that the hot weather could return for most of us later this month. James Madden, from Exacta Weather, predicted that we could see another heatwave across the UK as early as next weekend.

He said: “In and around August 10–15 will bring another additional and major heat surge across our shores and this could bring the hottest temperatures of the summer to date with overall values rising into the low to mid-30s at the very least once again. The more extreme possibility or peak of this expected heat surge could even see temperatures reaching into the mid to high 30s in the hottest parts of the country during this developing period.”
