Olympics viewers spot embarrassing BBC moment just before Keely Hodgkinson won gold

BBC bosses were left red-faced during Keely Hodgkinson’s stunning 800m victory on the tenth day of the Olympic Games. The 22 year old athlete delivered a flawless performance, securing gold ahead of Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma and Kenya’s Mary Moraa.

However, the BBC’s coverage was less than perfect. As they built up to the evening’s main event on the Paris track, they switched to footage of Hodgkinson’s family and friends at Leigh Athletics Club.

Normally, such footage is met with enthusiastic waves and cheers as loved ones spot themselves on TV, but this time it was different. Presenter Gabby Logan had to navigate an awkward moment as viewers suggested ‘they’re all watching Eurosport’.

“There at Leigh Harriers, are her club who nurtured her talent, who have been with her all the way,” Logan said during the BBC broadcast. “Hopefully they can see themselves, or they’re watching another channel.”

“Give us a wave Leigh Harriers. Maybe they’re on the wrong channel. Will someone call them and let them know Keeley is about to run on BBC One?”

However, those at the club did not respond to Logan’s requests and appeared to have chosen an alternative way to watch Hodgkinson’s incredible run. This sparked speculation that they were either tuning into Eurosport or experiencing a significant delay on BBC iPlayer.

Following the result, British champion Hodgkinson, who won Olympic silver in Tokyo, was ecstatic.

“That was absolutely incredible, I’ve worked so hard for this over the last year and you saw how much it meant to me when I crossed the line! And doing it here, where better? It felt like a home crowd despite it being in Paris, so I’m super happy.

“I wanted to be up at the front, probably going a bit quicker at the bell, but with the semi and final being back to back I think people were tired. It’s tough, I wanted to save myself for the last 100 and trust myself .

I could feel Mary pushing me on the back straight, but…composure and we got over the line first this time.

“I’m now the Olympic champion for the next four years and nobody can take that away from me and I can’t believe it.”
