Martha Stewart Found Motherhood ‘Not At All Natural’

Martha Stewart admits that she had her fair share of challenges as a mother.

In her new documentary, “Martha,” Stewart talked about becoming a mother when her daughter, Alexis, was born in 1965. She said her life came crashing down.

Stewart shares Alexis with her ex-husband, Andrew Stewart.

“Back then everybody was having babies so young. That was sort of like the style and the habit. I thought it was a natural thing and it turns out, it’s not all natural to be a mother,” she said.

Stewart’s friend Kathy Tatlock shared that Stewart found motherhood to be a “hard” task.

“She was happy when Lexi went down to nap so that she could be on her own,” she said. “She took care of Lexi, but she didn’t dowry on her. She was always a little bit chilly.”Susan Magrino, Stewart’s publicist, explained that the TV personality was “not good at her emotions, or expressing them.” Tatlock even noted that Stewart’s mom once said she regretted not hugging her daughter enough when she was younger.

“Feelings, we didn’t talk about stuff like that,” Stewart said while recalling her childhood with her parents and siblings. “That wasn’t part of our growing up. We were loved sort of obtusely when we were supposed to be loved. I mean, there was not a lot of affection in our house.

“How could I be a really great mother if I didn’t have the education to be a mother?” Stewart added.

Later on in the documentary, Alexis opened up about what it was like to be Stewart’s daughter and live under her parents’ roof as their marriage was crumbling.

“I grew up in a very uncomfortable house. I learned to suppress most of my emotions,” Alexis said.

Tatlock added, “Martha didn’t have that great joy in her marriage and raising a child.”
