Heidi Klum Transformed Into ET for Halloween

All hail the reigning queen of Halloween. In true Heidi Klum form, the supermodel and spooky season icon absolutely won the holiday this year with her latest creation. How, may you ask? It would seem like an impossible task to follow up history-making costumes like her taking on Jessica Rabbit, last year’s group peacock costume, and the unforgettable time she dressed up as Fiona from the Shrek films, but she managed to outshine them all with a couple’s costume with her husband Tom Kaulitz from the 1982 film E.T.

Both Klum and Kaulitz were dressed as giant ETs, however, Klum wore a blonde wig, black scarf, red shawl, and hat to recreate the iconic scene in the Steven Spielberg film when the alien dresses up and asks to “phone home.” The costumes were created using prosthetics and makeup to replicate the famous character’s bug eyes, head shape, and long skinny fingers.

Ahead of the party, Klum gave fans a glimpse into her getting process during an Amazon Live. Over the hour-long broadcast, Klum spoke about her now-famous Halloween party as her makeup artist began adhering prosthetics onto her face, which would eventually become ET’s neck.

Each year, she keeps the concept so under wraps that only her makeup and glam team knows about it—not even her friends. “Obviously there is a big team that is involved because obviously I can’t do this by myself,” she admitted. “But, other than that I don’t really tell anyone, because I love the surprise part of it all.”

Klum added that she goes all out every year because she hopes to “inspire” others. “I always try to surprise people. I want to wow people, surprise people, and most importantly, inspire people,” she said. “Halloween is all about the arts and changing yourself into something that you’re normally not. So I hope I inspire people with their costumes, so that everyone has fun on that day and be creative.”

Klum has also passed down her Halloween obsession to her kids. During the Live, she shared that her 15-year-old daughter, Lou, gets very into the holiday. “She makes a lot of her costumes herself, like she can do wigs, she makes props, so she’s very much into it. She doesn’t just go into a store and buy something.”

Earlier this month, they teased the costume leading up to its October 31 debut with a post on Instagram, per NBC.

“This is going to be the craziest one yet,” she said in a Reel featuring her getting into makeup. “I mean, this makes me so happy, you don’t even know! Look at this thing! I love it! I might shed a little tear now! That’s amazing!” She went on to say that even the most die-hard Halloween fans wouldn’t be able to guess what she had planned.

Klum knows just how much anticipation there is for her annual costume. She explained that there’s definitely pressure for her to go bigger and bigger each year.

“You know, I’m quite competitive with myself and the things I’ve done in the past,” she said in 2023 as she prepared for the peacock costume. “I also don’t want to let my Halloween fans down.”

Even with all the experience under her belt, she added that it always comes down to the wire and that up until she steps out for the flashbulbs, nobody knows whether or not the costume is a success or a doubt.

“It either works or it doesn’t,” she said. “That’s always the thing. And always fingers, toes, everything crossed that it works out.”
