Five area volleyball teams one boys soccer team advance to sectional finals

STRATFORD, Wis. (WSAW) – It was a real treat on Halloween night as area volleyball and soccer teams continued their march towards state in the sectional semifinals. A win would put them one win away from state.

Beginning in volleyball in D3, one-seed Stratford had their season end against Prescott. Despite a split after two sets, the Tigers lost the following two sets, ending their season. Elsewhere in D3, Nekoosa had their season end as well, losing 3-0 to Laconia.

In D2, Mosinee fell to Shawano in their sectional finale. Shawano used a strong first-set rally to set the tone for the night, winning in four sets and ending the season in Mosinee.

In D1, Marshfield fell to Hudson 3-0. In D4, Laona/Wabeno is moving on after a 3-0 win over Edgar. They’ll face Pittsville for a trip to state on Saturday after Pittsville defeated nearby foe Auburndale 3-1. Loyal had their season end, losing to Cochrane-Fountain City 3-1. Tri-County also stumbled as they lost to Fall River 3-2.

Moving to D5, three area teams advanced to sectional finals; Newman, Columbus Catholic and Prentice. Newman swept Green Bay NEW Lutheran 3-0 and will face Florence in Florence for a trip to state on Saturday. Columbus Catholic got by Gilman with a 3-1 win. They face Royall in the sectional finals on Saturday at Almond-Bancroft. As for Prentice, they won a five-set thriller over Mercer to advance. They’ll take on Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Saturday for a spot in the state tournament.

In boys’ soccer, one area team is moving on as Northland Pines topped Cumberland 5-1. They’ll face Aquinas for a trip to state on Saturday after the Blugolds beat Columbus Catholic 2-0 on Thursday. Elsewhere, Marshfield had their season end with a 4-1 loss to River Falls, as did Lakeland, losing to Shawano 0-0 (5-4).
