End of daylight saving time in the United States: When do clocks go back in 2024?

Although many Americans dislike seasonal time adjustments, the biannual daylight saving time (DST) changes will continue for now. Next Sunday, November 3, the clocks will have to be turned back one hour to begin winter time.

Although some initiatives have been presented to eliminate the change, they have not been approved for now. Federal regulations currently prevent states from adopting daylight saving time permanently. One of the major proposed changes to federal legislation, such as the Sunshine Protection Act (Sunshine Protection Act), has failed to advance in Congress.

The Sunshine Protection Act is a bill that Senator Marco Rubio of Florida has introduced in the US Senate every year since 2018. In March 2023, Florida Republican Representative Vern Buchanan introduced it in the House of Representatives. The bill would establish permanent daylight saving time nationwide. “I know it’s not the most important issue facing the United States, but it is one of those issues where there is a lot of agreement. If we get this approved, we won’t have to do this stupid thing anymore,” Rubio said.

According to Reuters, some 30 states have introduced legislation since 2015 to end twice-yearly clock changing, with some states proposing to do so only if neighboring states do the same. There is scientific evidence that time change increases the risk of adverse health consequences, such as heart attacks and strokes.

When does daylight saving time start and end in the United States?

Daylight saving time in the United States begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. This year it started on March 10 and will end on November 3.

If current legislation does not change, in 2025 the dates would be March 9 and November 2, and for 2026, March 8 and November 1.

What time does it change to daylight saving time in the United States?

In autumn, clocks go back one hour, from 2:00 am to 1:00 am. Most electronic devices make this change automatically.

Which States do not follow daylight saving time in the United States?

Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are the States and territories that do not observe daylight saving time.

Will daylight saving time be permanent in the United States?

Although the Sunshine Protection Act of Senator Marco Rubio gained momentum in 2022 and it seemed that permanent daylight saving time would be enacted in 2023, the legislation has stalled since then. Without further movement on the proposed changes, daylight saving time is expected to continue until 2025.
