Chappell Roan Performs New Song During First ‘SNL’ Appearance

Chappell Roan boasted all the glitz and glamor of a true Midwest Princess in an unforgettable performance on Saturday Night Live.

The synth-pop star, 26, appeared as the musical guest in the sketch comedy show’s Nov. 2 episode, with comedian John Mulaney as the host.

In a performance marked by elaborate, colorful and fun sets and costumes, Roan was introduced by Mulaney, 42, for her first song of the night, her hit track, “Pink Pony Club.”

Dressed in a glittering white, floor-length gown, the singer wore a voluminous red wig with silver streaks and bold eye makeup as she began the song sat on a throne-like chair.

The set featured an altar-like structure draped in material and bows, as well as projections of pink ponies galloping on screen on the walls behind. Roan’s band also wore equally striking sparkly outfits and bold wigs.

For his second performance of the night, Roan debuted a new country-style track, “The Giver,” and was again introduced by the night’s host.

This time, the singer wore a pink and white gingham bralette with lapels and a tie in the center, as well as matching shorts and cowboy boots. while her band and backing singers sported similarly country-themed looks.

The fun set featured plants, faux rock pillars and steps as well as trees projected on the walls, which were revealed when theater curtains raised after Roan began singing.

Earlier this year, on June 20, Roan graced the stage of a different NBC property, The Tonight Showwith a technicolor performance of her instant hit song, “Good Luck, Babe!”

Roan’s vibrant show comes after she embarked on The Midwest Princess Tour for her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

The singer recently canceled early September tour appearances in Europe. Following two more show cancellations at the All Things Go festival, Roan revealed his overnight fame had become overwhelming and needed time to prioritize his mental health.

Roan’s name last appeared on SNL in the Sept. 28 sketch by Bowen Yang, which commented on fame’s impact on Roan’s mental health and sparked controversy among fans. While some believed Yang, dressed as viral baby pigmy hippo Moo Deng, to be supporting Roan, others viewed the sketch as a mockery.

“Leave her alone! Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and grace, so stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her,” Yang’s Moo Deng said.

Yang clarified the next day that the sketch was in support of Roan. “If my personal stance and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting then there it is I guess,” Yang wrote in an Instagram story. “Everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever.”
