Central Ohio serial killer Shawn Grate featured on ABC 20/20 episode

A Central Ohio serial killer, Shawn Grate, is the focus of an all-new episode of “20/20 True Crime” airing tonight. Grate, who was sentenced to death, is set to be executed in 2025, although appeals are still ongoing.

Terri Sullivan spoke with ABC’s John Quinones about the episode, which delves into the chilling details of Grate’s crimes. Quinones said, “What was it about this case that caught your attention? I know you guys have been following it and covering it so well over the past few years, but the rest of America is about to find out tonight how riveting and mystifying this case was and for reaching with its implications, and the fact that this man was a serial killer.”

The episode highlights a harrowing 911 call from a woman, referred to as Jane Doe, who was held captive by Grate. Quinones described her as a hero, saying, “She’s a real hero in all of this because she had the wherewithal to continue whispering, trying to get police to come to the rescue, but then the phone line goes dead.”

Another key figure in the investigation was veteran detective Kim Mager.

“She sat with her unyielding determination, and with her psychological instinct, you see her sitting for eight days with Shawn Grate in the interrogation room,” Quinones said.

The special edition of “20/20 True Crime,” titled “Meet the Other Me,” airs Friday at 9 pm on ABC 6.
