Thousands without power in Westchester Friday night as storm rolls through Hudson Valley

Thousands were without power Friday night as the worst of tropical depression Debby’s remnants continued to roll through Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties.

As of 8:30 pm Friday, more than 5,000 ConEd customers were impacted by power outages, with over 4,000 of those customers in Westchester. At the time of this story, the utility was “evaluating conditions” in order to give an estimated restoration time.

NYSEG reported 27,891 outages throughout their coverage area, with 624 customers affected in Putnam County, and 713 in Westchester. There was no estimated time for service restoration at the time of this story. Orange & Rockland reported just 54 customers without power in Rockland County, with no restoration time available due to the utility “evaluating conditions.”

Orange & Rockland, ConEd bring mutual aid workers to Hudson Valley

Utility companies in the Lower Hudson Valley were plenty ready for what the weather could bring on Friday.

Ahead of tropical depression Debby’s landfall, hundreds of mutual aid utility workers arrived in the Hudson Valley to lend a hand to ConEd. Crews staged at SUNY Purchase Friday afternoon.

“Now is a really challenging time of year for us,” said Deanne Ostrowski, director of strategic planning for ConEd, noting that heavy rains in the area over several days could contribute to falling trees. Ostrowski said crews were prepared and ready to address service issues throughout the area.

Orange & Rockland began finalizing storm preparations earlier in the week, bringing in 150 additional mutual aid workers to supplement its storm response, a press release said.

How to report power outages if you are a ConEd, NYSEG or O&R customer

The easiest way to report a power outage, and get updates on estimated restoration times, is to do so via your utility provider’s website.

You can click here to report a power outage if you are a ConEd customer, which will sign you up automatically for restoration updates, to be received via text or phone call. You can also text REG to 688-243 to get the process started.

NYSEG customers can do the same by heading to this website and providing either a phone number or account number. Customers can also call 1-800-572-1131 to report outages. The utility reminds customers to stay away from downed power lines, “even lines that appear dead can be energized.”

“Also, stay out of flooded basements. If you suspect a natural gas leak, get up, get out, and get away,” the NYSEG website says.

If you’re an O&R customer, report your service outage here. Orange & Rockland says customers should call 9-1-1 if they smell gas or suspect a gas leak, rather than reporting it via the website.
