More bursts of heavy rain kick off the August long weekend in southern Ontario

Most summer weekends across southern Ontario have included a thunderstorm or rain risk this year, and as we kick off the August long weekend, the threat for heavy downpours looms over the region, once again.

Special weather statements and rainfall warnings are in place for slow moving thunderstorms that could produce locally heavy rain. In some areas, between 30 to 60 mm, or higher, it is possible at times. Both Toronto and Hamilton are included in the weather alert, while the city of London is under a rainfall warning.

Not everyone will see the rain throughout the day on Friday, but communities that do encounter one of these storms will endure torrential downpours until the storm fizzles out or moves on. The worst of the rain looks to track in between Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, and Georgian Bay.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” warns Environment and Climate Change Canada in the special weather statement. “Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

With it being the August long weekend, as well, these bouts of heavy rain could add to travel times and deteriorating conditions. Be sure to plan ahead, and stay up-to-date on the weather warnings in your area.

Remember, never attempt to drive across a flooded roadway. It’s impossible to tell how deep the water is until it’s too late, and it only takes a little bit of moving water to lift a vehicle and carry it away.

July ends with record rains

This additional bout of rain comes after we ended the month of July with a record 215 mm for Toronto, and copious amounts of rain for other parts of southern Ontario. Although the start of August wasn’t expected to be as wet, the extremely humid air mass is dragging the heavy rain back in.

The humidex on Friday is expected to feel close to, and even reach, 40, indicating an abundance of moisture in the atmosphere.
